The Authority’s Peace River Water Treatment Facility is located on Kings Highway in DeSoto County. The Facility utilizes a conventional surface water treatment process consisting of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, disinfection, and filtration. The Peace River Water Treatment Facility is capable of producing up to 51 million gallons per day of drinking water to serve the Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota, and Manatee County region. These facilities are currently supplying about 26 million gallons per day to Authority Customers.
The source water for the Peace River Water Treatment Facility is the Peace River. River withdrawals are in accordance with the flow-based schedule in the Authority’s Water Use Permit. The flow-based schedule allows harvest of a small percentage of the run-of-the-river when flow in the Peace River exceeds a threshold value (the minimum flow). The schedule ensures that harvest of water for public water supply doesn’t remove freshwater from the river that is critical to the health of the estuary downstream.
Water pumped from the river is stored in a 6.5 billion gallon off-stream reservoir system for use in meeting Authority Customer demands. Most of the water harvested and stored from the river is taken during high-flow periods in the wet season. The large-volume off-stream storage, and high capacity pumping facilities on the river enables the Authority to utilize a seasonally abundant resource to meet about 40% of the drinking water need in the region in an environmentally sustainable manner.
