Emergency Action Plan Update
Water Supply Authority is Collecting Phone Numbers of Property Owners in the General Vicinity of Peace River Facility
The Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority (Authority) is collecting the phone numbers of property owners and property tenants in the general vicinity of the Peace River Facility in DeSoto County for the purpose of updating our EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN. The Facility and reservoir is located near Kings Highway, approximately five miles east of I-75 (click on location map to view).
The Peace River Reservoir is an above-ground impoundment capable of holding 6 billion gallons of water (see second photo). This reservoir sits within the 6,000-acre RV Griffin Reserve (land preserve). The Reservoir receives and stores water pumped from the Peace River and is used to supply adjacent Peace River Water Treatment Facility to meet public drinking water needs in Charlotte, DeSoto, and Sarasota Counties.
The reservoir was constructed inside four miles of a highly-engineered earthen embankment completed in 2009. The embankment was designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and a simultaneous 48-hour, 60-inch rainfall event, so the structure is very safe and the Authority staff maintain this facility in top condition. In spite of the many safety measures employed for the reservoir, there is always a need to be prepared for possible unsafe reservoir conditions where potential flooding may occur as a result of an emergency.
As part of that preparation, the Authority is updating the telephone list for property owners and tenants living in the general vicinity of the Facility and reservoir. The list will be used for a reverse-911 type of system to alert and advise nearby property owners and residents in the event of an emergency condition at the reservoir.
Property owners of record in the vicinity of the reservoir system will receive a mail-out from the Authority requesting the property owner’s and if applicable – property tenant’s phone number information for this reverse-911 list. The Authority has contracted with Progressive Water Resources to assist us in updating the emergency call list. Please complete the information form request and return via one of the means described below so we can include you in our emergency database. You may also call us directly with your information. We will not share your phone number with any other party.
We greatly appreciate your assistance. If you have any questions about this process, please contact us via email at ARoberts@prowatersource.com, or by telephone at (941) 552-5657.
